Seminar, one hour. While Chinese, Japanese, and Korean seem similar, having shared centuries of cultural exchange, study focuses on how key differences in specific linguistic features shape ways of seeing. Through the lens of linguistic relativity, exploration of how linguistic systems influence how people communicate, think, relate, and imagine. Consideration of questions such as what is countable, how animals appear differently in idioms across languages, why fictional characters speak the way they do, and why different languages see different numbers of colors in the rainbow. Learning is through discussion and comparison, drawing from all participants’ linguistic backgrounds. Knowledge of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean is not required–materials are explained clearly with translations–and different language backgrounds and perspectives aid discussions. P/NP grading.
